4th Line Theatre is thrilled to present the world premiere of Judith Thompson’s Who Killed Snow White? It explores the journey of one family to support their daughter, Serena, and her fight to stay strong in the face of bullying and harassment. While the play is not based on actual events, it tells an all too familiar story in the lives of young women. No community is spared of sexual harassment or violence—it is a pressing subject in all of our lives and, while it is often a taboo topic, society can change. The cultural sea has begun to shift, and its resurgence is being spearheaded by a wave of intersectional feminist movements, the #metoo movement, and an increasing willingness to share our stories and make a positive change in society.
Since 2012, 4th Line Theatre has been exploring issues surrounding inclusivity and diversity, and post-traumatic stress, among other equally pressing topics, so developing a play about modern youth culture and sexual violence seemed like a natural new work for the company.
Who Killed Snow White? is a uniquely relevant play, and 4th Line Theatre is riding the wave of a cultural moment to shine a light on the serious issues of teens and mental health. Much of the play’s content will be familiar to teens but may come as a surprise to their families. At its heart, Who Killed Snow White? is a beautiful, challenging, and fascinating work by one of Canada’s finest playwrights, Judith Thompson. It is 4th Line Theatre’s hope that, in presenting this important play, it will engage multi-generational audiences to come together and explore what it means to be a teenager in the modern day. Who Killed Snow White? Is presented as a part of the theatre’s Canadian Pulse series of plays—which explore modern Canadian culture and the issues Canadians are struggling to understand.
This “ripped from the headlines” play is an unflinching exploration of social media and cyberbullying among today’s youth. Playwright Judith Thompson delves deep into the heart of our culture to examine the roots of sexual violence and the culture of toxic masculinity we struggle to understand. This 4th Line Theatre world premiere will feature a large cast, youth chorus, and elements of the epic and the intimate.
Amidst a world, full of challenges, that can feel hostile, 4th Line Theatre seeks to leave the audience with a message of hope and seeks to be a part of and aid in the conception of a discussion to end the stigma. The company welcomes you to the Farm this season to be a part of this discussion, to help pave the way for young people’s voices to be heard.
