St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik presented the Key to the City to renowned Canadian playwright Norm Foster at the third annual Foster Festival premier on Friday.
Sendzik said Foster, whose worked across Canada as an actor and playwright, has helped put St. Catharines on the world map, said a press release.
"The Key to the City is presented to individuals whose contributions in their career reflect positively on our city – an honour we are proud to present to Mr. Norm Foster," Sendzik said. "Through his original pieces, Mr. Foster's plays reflect real life and humanity, sharing stories with humour and wit, and have helped put St. Catharines on the map as a world class destination for original theatre and cultural experiences."
Foster first launched the Foster Festival with a summer series at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in 2016. In 2017, he was appointed to the Order of Canada for his achievements.
Now in its third season, the festival draws audiences from across the world, said the press release.
The Key to the City was presented at the premier of Foster's newest play "Come Down from Up River." During his presentation, Sendzik thanked the Foster Festival for their contributions to the community.
"The Foster Festival has become a vital element of our creative community and committed partners as well. In sharing their passion for the arts and 'humour with heart,' the Foster Festival is helping to build compassion and understanding by including children and youth in special programming, showing the transformative power of the arts," Sendzik said. "Thank you for making St. Catharines your home."
Foster joins a small group of local leaders who have received the key to the city from the sitting Mayor of St. Catharines, said the press release.
