Following the June announcement of a newly streamlined program and structure SummerWorks Performance Festival is thrilled to share details today regarding 2018 Festival venues and box office location which concentrate the Festival’s footprint in the West Queen West neighbourhood and introduce a new major presentation venue, the Toronto Media Arts Centre (TMAC) located at 32 Lisgar Street.
The 2018 venue line-up sees SummerWorks consolidating the Festival largely around Lisgar Park and presenting work in four spaces in The Theatre Centre, two spaces at Pia Bouman, moving audiences through Trinity Bellwoods Park, and occupying six spaces in the Toronto Media Arts Centre, becoming the largest public arts event to present work in the new community hub.
“This is a really exciting new partnership for us,” said SummerWorks Performance Festival Artistic and Managing Director Laura Nanni. “As the performance community and SummerWorks itself experiment more and more at the intersection of live performance and technology, working with the Toronto Media Arts Centre and its residents will provide rich opportunities for partnership and collaboration now and in the future. We are thrilled to support and be a part of the fulsome realization of a new creative community hub in the west end.”
This year the Festival Box Office will be located in front of The Theatre Centre at 1115 Queen Street West and will be open daily August 9– 19 from noon until 8:00pm. Advanced booking is available starting today for SummerWorks Festival pass holders; single tickets go on sale beginning July 16.
The Festival also today shares programming details for the newly formed SummerWorks Exchange stream, under which all industry and professional development activities have been formalized.
SummerWorks Exchange Workshops will take place on Monday, August 13th starting with an Industry Lunch followed by three workshop presentations. Participants will have the opportunity to choose between concurrent workshops providing tools for generous listening, decolonizing performance practice, and equitable engagement within cross-cultural collaboration.
Workshops include Affinity Gathering facilitated by Donna-Michelle St. Bernard and Cole Alvis for Ad Hoc Assembly; Systems by Design facilitated by Jerrold McGrath for Artscape Launchpad; and Talking Treaties Quick Creation with the Dish with One Spoon facilitated by Ange Loft.
On Tuesday, August 14th SummerWorks hosts Open Studios co-curated by Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Dancemakers, and SummerWorks, inviting six local artists to open up their creative process and share new ideas with industry professionals and general audiences. Selections to be announced in the coming weeks on the SummerWorks website and social media channels.
SummerWorks Exchange activities conclude on Wednesday, August 15th with an Info Fair with funders and local arts organizations, a Systems Change Open Space workshop focusing on what is needed to create a healthier and more sustainable performance ecology and wrapping up with a Community Meal in Lisgar Park.
The Opening Night Party on August 9th will be held at the Toronto Media Arts Centre with the Closing Night Party and Awards Ceremony to roll out at The Theatre Centre.
All Exchange events as well as the Opening and Closing Night events will be ASL interpreted this year; for complete information on SummerWorks Performance Festival accessibility initiatives and offerings, visit summerworks.ca/access.
