Gardiner Museum
he Community Arts Space at the Gardiner Museum is in full swing, with a lineup of exciting free community programming taking place throughout the month. On August 2, the Museum will be celebrating the opening of Reclaiming Artifacts, an exhibition led by youth artists from the Lawrence Heights neighbourhood, then setting the stage for the first Panic in the Labyrinth, a live poetry reading that reflects on the progress of the feminist movement, as well as the obstacles it faces. I wanna dance with some body is a new outdoor installation by artist jes sachse, on view August 1-September 17. The Public Opening for Maldewin Weskijinu / Blood Soaked Soil, an exhibition by artist Louis Esmé is on August 24. All Community Arts Space programming is free to attend! Randolph Centre for the Arts
Dora award nominee Thom Allison directs Randolph Centre for the Arts' third-year students in Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece A Little Night Music, a Tony Award-winning musical inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night. Set in 1900s Sweden, A Little Night Music whisks audiences away to a weekend in the country where infinite possibilities of new romances and second chances bring endless surprises. Japan Foundation, Toronto
Come by the Japan Foundation, Toronto gallery this month for the new photography exhibition Noh Masks On Stage which runs through the fall. In conjunction, a lecture by Masayuki Nakamura from the Yokohama Noh Theatre to share his insight about the masks. Japan's most famous taiko soloist is coming to Toronto on August 22! The Japan Foundation will be presenting the Eitetsu Hayashi Taiko Drum Concert at the JCCC. On August 30, a lecture by Dr. Yonemura on the popular Studio Ghibli anime My Neighbor Totoro. Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre
At the Gallery in the J: Ontario Jewish Archives and the MNjcc present Something Borrowed featuring wedding photographs and records from the growing Jewish Community in Canada in the first half of the twentieth Century, on-going to August 29. With The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, Eric Carle's timeless classics for families have made their way off the page and onto the stage of the Al Green Theatre, on Saturdays & Sundays in August, closes September 30. A Different Booklist Cultural Centre
There are some great events happening at ADBCC this month. On August 1 join Coach House Books and ADBCC for an event in honour of Emancipation Day, with readings by Kathy Grant, Cheryl Thompson, and a tribute to Judge George Carter. This month R.I.S.E features Domanique Grant on August 2, (Admission $5). On August 8, celebrate the history, struggles, and contributions of people with mixed Black, Native, and Nova Scotian ancestry with a press conference and musical performance with the The Afro Métis Constitution Project. Join the Socialist Project on August 12 for a public talk on French politics. On August 16 Lisa Tomlinson launches The African-Jamaican Aesthetic: Cultural Retention And Transformation Across Borders: an exploration of the ways in which diasporic African-Jamaican writers employ cultural referents aesthetically in their literary works to challenge dominant European literature. Istituto Italiano di Cultura
On Tuesday, July 31 the Istituto Italiano di Cultura will host the opening of the photo exhibit Melodramatic Realism, with photos from the sets of three Luchino Visconti's masterpieces: Ossessione /Obsession, La Terra Trema/The Earth Trembles and Bellissima. The first steps of Visconti and of Neorealism are documented in this exhibition of great value, with photos by Osvaldo Civirani and Paul Ronald. On Thursday, August 2 Professor Andrea Segrè will take us on a journey of discovery in his lecture on Italian gastronomy from the perspective of its founder, Pellegrino Artusi. On Wednesday, August 15 the IIC is pleased to host Laura Campisi's Italian Jazz, featuring Michael Occhipinti and Roberto Occhipinti. Italian Jazz is a musical project designed by Italian-born singer and songwriter Laura Campisi to share the rich patrimony of the Italian songbook with North American audiences. Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU
In August at the Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU two exhibits featuring Arvo Pärt will be on display until September 2018: Tõnu Tormis' photo exhibit On Pärt and Arvo Pärt - Renowned and Unknown by the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum. Royal Ontario Museum (The ROM)
On now, Modernism on the Ganges: Raghubir Singh Photographs presents the innovative works of street photographer Raghubir Singh, who pioneered the use of colour film to document the rapidly changing social, political, and cultural scenes of India (included with general admission). Related programming includes ROM Connects on August 24, featuring a screening of the Agnès Varda documentary Faces Places with panel discussion (free with a reservation). Prompted by the ROM's presentation of Modernism on the Ganges and an allegation of sexual misconduct made against the deceased photographer, the ROM's #MeToo & the Arts initiative features an installation and a series of public engagements, all seeking to encourage a larger conversation about how museums, and the public, are engaging with art within the context of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements (free admission). Programming includes ROM Connects on August 17, featuring a screening of the documentary Slut or Nut: Diary of a Rape Trial, with panel discussion (free with a reservation).
