Johann Strauss, Ivor Novello and Franz Lehar were three of the greatest tunesmiths of all time. Their legacy stretches from the Golden Age of Operetta to the Silver Age and melodies such as The Merry Widow Waltz, Champagne’s Delicious Bubbles and We’ll Gather Lilacs in the Spring Again continue to resonate with audiences of all ages.
Hear these melodies and more in Toronto Operetta Theatre’s 2018-2019 Season.
DIE FLEDERMAUS by Strauss – the Waltz King himself – opens on December 28 at the St. Lawrence Centre with further performances on December 29, 30 (mat), 31, & January 2, 2019. Conducted by the COC’s Derek Bate, Lara Ciekiewicz stars as Rosalinda along with Elizabeth Beeler, Adam Fisher and the debuting Caitlin Wood as Adele.
Known as the ‘handsomest man in England’, Ivor Novello penned a number of musical hits for the West End and none greater than PERCHANCE TO DREAM. TOT’s first ever Novello musical will be led by Music Director Peter Teifenbach with Lynn Isnar, Caitlin McCaughey, Eugenia Dermentzis and Cian Horrobin as Novello’s hopeless romantics. One performance only at the STLC - March 3, 2019, at 3 pm.
Lehar’s THE MERRY WIDOW premiered in 1905 and its appeal remains undiminished. Rene Fleming was the Met’s Merry Widow and our own Lucia Cesaroni takes the title role for TOT and for the Vancouver Opera…right here in Canada! Her co-stars will be Daniela Agostino, Michael Nyby and Gregory Finney. Larry Beckwith conducts the orchestra and TOT’s General Director Guillermo Silva-Marin is stage director for all three season productions. MERRY WIDOW performances: April 23, 24, 26, 27, & 28 (mat), 2019, at the St. Lawrence Centre.
The season also includes Elizabeth and Friends, a concert at the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto on October 11, 2018, with Elizabeth DeGrazia, Gabrielle Prata, Keith Klassen and Robert Longo singing hits from G & S to Broadway. Out Of Character will be presented at the St. Lawrence Centre on November 3 and features the music of Latin America with Margie Bernal, Lynn Isnar, Guillermo Silva-Marin and Larry Beckwith. Doyle a la Carte returns on February 16, 2019, at the Edward Jackman Centre with Henry Ingram as Host and M.C.
In addition, to support from the Jackman Foundation, Bedolfe Foundation, Dalglish Family Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and Toronto Arts Council, the company counts among its partners Classical 96.3 FM and The Epoch Times.
