Bundle of JOY from Saskatoon is currently presenting the Toronto premiere of It’s Raining in Barcelona, a 2004 Catalan play by Pau Miró in a translation by Sharon G. Feldman. The characters are so detailed the play feels full-length though only an hour long. Leora Joy Godden is superb as Lali, a prostitute who longs for higher things like art, literature and poetry. Alan Long is enigmatic as David, her favourite client, who aims to fulfil these yearnings. Jeffrey Pufahl is grungy but pitiable as Carlos, her boyfriend/pimp, who takes his fear of losing Lali out on himself. Miró successfully avoids clichés in taking these fraught relationships to a surprising, thought-provoking conclusion.
